In the second week of May we have just planted out almost 300 dahlia tubers, comprising approximately 70 varieties, mainly in the Walled Kitchen Garden but also in the Sunken Garden, Double Border and Philadelphus Garden.

The tubers were lifted from the ground last November and have been overwintered in the dry, frost-free Back Sheds behind the Vinery.

The planting scheme is, as always, different from previous years, and includes large colour schemed borders in which the dahlias are combined with complementary perennials and annuals, as well as a cutting borders and dahlia meadow with multi-coloured planting among the grasses.

The earliest blooms should be seen in July and, with regular dead-heading, the display will go on until the first frosts – usually late October. The display is expected to be at its best for the Dahlia Festival in September.
