Kelmarsh Hall was the joint winner in the ‘Working with Children and Young People’ category in the Northamptonshire Heritage Awards 2012.

The award was in recognition of the school visits programme that Kelmarsh has developed, offering children the chance to discover where their food comes from through activities in the kitchen garden.

By the end of this summer, just under 500 children will have visited the 18th century garden, taking part in seed sowing, cooking demonstrations, herb hunts and taste tests. Several visiting teachers have reported that what children had learnt in the classroom is reinforced by the activities at Kelmarsh. In addition, project leaders said that that many of the children who have visited live in flats, so it provided them with a wonderful opportunity to explore a garden and get stuck in.

Kelmarsh also holds storytelling and cooking events in the garden (pictured) to widen its audience and encourage more families to visit.

Funding for the school visits was provided by the Lottery’s Local Food Programme and was part of project to bring the kitchen garden back to life and enable community groups to get involved.
