One of our talented volunteers has won an RHS gold award for her creation of a beautiful border.

June Feehan and friend Margaret Dobbs scooped the honour at the RHS Flower Show Birmingham at BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2014 on June 15th.

The former nurse, who began working as a garden designer in October, said she could not believe it, as this was only her second competition event.

She said: “We were working frantically until two minutes before the judging began and then we had to walk away while the judges took a look around.

“When we came back later on we saw that a medal had been placed. We walked up to it very slowly and could not believe it when it was a gold medal.”

The theme of the garden was the Birmingham Back to Backs – houses built in the 1840s in Birmingham that were centred around a communal courtyard. Now a National Trust attraction, the Back to Backs housed many industries and June and Margaret used these as inspiration for their border design.

In the centre was placed a tailors dummy, with two pieces of hanging fabric, whose colour influenced the planting and design scheme. The garden took four days to prepare and included varieties such as agapanthus, salvias, scabiosia and geraniums.

June has been volunteering at Kelmarsh since September.

She said: “Becoming a Kelmarsh Garden Volunteer has so many benefits, from the social aspects of working with other gardeners to helping to maintain and improve the gardens of a beautiful house. It also of course improves your gardening skills and keeps your fit.”
