About the Kelmarsh Hall Estate

Education & Research Advisory Committee

In 2002 the Trustees felt that, in order to promote and advance two of the core objectives of the Trust, a committee of co opted members drawn from the relevant specialist fields might be able to advise on matters relating to Education and Research across the estate, and in the hall and gardens.

The aims of this committee are to:

  • To advise the Trustees on all matters relating to programmes of Education and Research at Kelmarsh. Archaeology, History (including Landscape, Cultural, Social, Architectural, Garden, Agricultural and Transport History), Natural History and Ecology and in Art and Music.
  • To consider Education & Research relating to the Hall, its ancillary buildings, pleasure grounds, the wider estate and the landscape within which it is set.
  • To advise the Trustees on the development of EDUCATIONAL programmes at all levels, including primary, secondary and tertiary education, for specialist groups and for organisations (both locally and nationally) and for the general public.
  • To consider the extent to which the Trust should organise and promote such programmes by itself, or in partnership with other bodies, or should consider making facilities available at Kelmarsh for other bodies to organise their own educational programmes.
  • To consider all aspects of RESEARCH, including:
    a. Archaeology (by both survey and excavation)
    b. History (including Landscape, Cultural, Social, Architectural, Garden, Agricultural and Transport History). All sources shall be considered, including the use of Archival, Printed, Pictorial and Oral material, Natural History and Ecology.
  • To suggest to the Trustees those aspects of research which should have priority, either because they have an immediate bearing on the conservation and management of the Estate, or on the educational programme.
  • To advise the Trustees on partnerships or joint ventures with academic institutions, other organisations and individuals who may be able to assist with aspects of the Research programme, or make use of aspects of the estate for their own research.

We are currently working with the Further and Higher Education sectors to develop a range of research and learning opportunities. Our focus in on identifying creative ways of making our archive information more accessible to enable students to incorporate the history and ongoing work of the Kelmarsh Estate into their studies.

The Trust welcomes all who wish to engage in formal and informal learning activities and a series of organised events from bat walks to a variety of practical and creative workshops have been established this year to encourage visitors to experience a variety of learning opportunities, these can be seen in Up and Coming Events.
