The Kelmarsh Blog

We have welcomed some new feathered friends to our walled kitchen garden – and they have already made themselves quite at home.

The eight chickens arrived in the middle of May after being rescued by the British Hen Welfare Trust.

Gardens Volunteer Co-ordinator Fiona Alexander said: “When they first arrived they appeared a little nervous and stayed together in a group. But after a few days they soon found their way around and started to explore.

“They have also been laying eggs every day, some of which have been taken home by our volunteer gardeners and others have been used in our tea room.

Fiona added: “A couple have even found the freedom a bit much and have found a hole in the chicken wire. They must like it here though as they did not wander far.”

Our hen coups were kindly donated by Castle Academy in Northampton.
