Roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty and take part in Kelmarsh Hall’s Big Bulb-Planting Challenge to plant 2,000 fritillary bulbs in two days!

The event on Saturday 26th October and Sunday 27th October is to mark Wild About Gardens Week, a joint initiative by the RHS and The Wildlife Trusts to encourage people to support local biodiversity and to fight the decline in plant and animal species.

Kelmarsh’s aim is to create a new native meadow of fritillaries in the grounds of the hall with the help of its team of regular volunteers, plus members of the community. Participants can be accompanied by their children or grandchildren as there will be a number of children’s wildlife projects, including building bug hotels and log piles.

The weekend also provides an opportunity for anyone who is interested in becoming a garden volunteer to meet the team and ask questions about what the Kelmarsh volunteers get up to.

Kelmarsh’s volunteer co-ordinator and gardener Fiona Alexander said: “The emphasis will be on having fun, enjoying the camaraderie of the challenge and meeting new people. You don’t have to be horticultural or a gardening expert to join us.

“We’re keen to extend our snake’s head fritillary display - we already have something quite different as visitors can get up close to these exquisite flowers. They’re always a popular attraction so it’s something we’d like to build on. Wild About Gardens Week seemed the perfect opportunity to get the community involved in a horticultural project which will also support the local biodiversity. Spring flowers like fritillaries are so important to bumblebees coming out of hibernation because they provide a source of nectar during those critical early days.”

Bulb-planting will take place from 9am to 4pm on both days and volunteers can stay as long or as little as they would like. Spades and trowels will be provided but those with their own bulb planters are welcome to bring them along.

Volunteers should bring a packed lunch but free hot drinks will be provided throughout the day.
